The MEET Network has been included in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Good Practices database for its work on the promotion and development of ecotourism in the Mediterranean. Three conservation projects have provided the foundation for the achievements accomplished by MEET: ENI CBC Med´s MEET Project, and Interreg MED programmes DestiMED and currently, DestiMED PLUS.
MEET’s work contributes to the implementation of several SDGs. The creation of Local Ecotourism Clusters (LEC) supports SDGs 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land) through the promotion of sustainable tourism management practices. MEET’s Ecotourism Standard and calculator to measure and monitor the ecological impact of ecotourism aligns with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). In alignment with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), MEET helps protected areas to reach target markets through the MEET catalogue, ensuring economic gain. Finally, MEET supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through capacity building and knowledge-exchange tools.
This work is achieved through the MEET´s alternative model for sustainable tourism development which has been tried and tested across natural park destinations in the Mediterranean. Learn more about the MEET Model here.
